NEW YORK – Federal officials say they'll fund a series of designs to protect New York City and New Jersey from future weather events like Superstorm Sandy.
Six projects have been chosen from a pool of finalists as part of the "Rebuild by Design" competition created by President Barack Obama's Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force. The projects unveiled Monday are in an early phase and will cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
One of four New York projects creates an 8-mile system of dikes around low-lying parts of Manhattan, while another would help drain stretches of Long Island.
Another plan calls for artificial islands to be created along the New York and New Jersey coast to blunt storm surges.
In New Jersey, the two projects selected will focus on Hoboken and Jersey City, and the Meadowlands area, where thousands of homes sustained damage in October 2012.
