Man charged with making false statement connected to 1978 bombing of trans-Alaska pipeline

Federal prosecutors in Alaska say a 61-year-old Fairbanks man has been indicted on charges of making false statements to the FBI regarding the 1978 bombing of the trans-Alaska pipeline.

U.S. Attorney Karen Loeffler (LEF'-lur) says in an announcement that Phillip Martin Olson acknowledged carrying out the bombing and falsely implicated another person in assisting him.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Bottini (bo-TEE-nee) says the statute of limitations has run out for prosecuting the actual bombing.

Olson was arrested Friday morning and ordered held pending a detention hearing. Directory assistance did not list a number for Olson.

The case that has long been a mystery to Alaskans.

The breach from the bomb north of Fairbanks spilled up to 588,000 gallons of crude less than a year after the pipeline began moving oil.
