Arizona high school dedicates yearbook pages to pregnant students

An Arizona high school’s decision to dedicate two pages in its yearbook to pictures of students expecting babies has some parents criticizing the administration's wisdom to include them in the publication.

Mesa High School's yearbook has two pages -- 40 and 41-- dedicated to photos of the difficulties a student/parent has with raising a child, The Arizona Republic’s report said. The pages are titled, "I'm working a double shift."

Kathee Merkley, the mother of a 17-year-old at the school, told The Republic that the pages have started a conversation among her daughter's friends, but none have been positive. She told the paper that some students glued the pages together.

Merkley told the paper she was disturbed by one image of a male student hugging the belly of a pregnant classmate.

The school's principal did not comment in the paper's report. But Helen Hollands,  the Mesa Public Schools spokeswoman, told the paper, "A yearbook is to commemorate the achievements of the students, particularly the senior class. Probably this would not fall into that category."
