MIAMI – A federal prosecutor says new charges are likely for two brothers in a South Florida terrorism case after they were accused of assaulting deputy U.S. marshals.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Gilbert said at a hearing Friday a grand jury is hearing evidence about the accusations against defendants Sheheryar and Raess Alam Qazi. They have pleaded not guilty to charges of plotting to blow up New York City landmarks to avenge deadly U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan.
Last month, authorities say the brothers attacked two deputy U.S. marshals at a facility where they view classified evidence. It is a federal crime to assault a U.S. marshal.
A new lawyer was also appointed for Sheheryar Qazi. His former attorney witnessed the alleged assault and has been called to testify before the grand jury.
