OKLAHOMA CITY – The president of a crafts store chain who says the federal government has no business ordering him which health care options to offer employees has no problem telling local governments what they should be teaching in their schools.
Steve Green, president of Hobby Lobby, persuaded an Oklahoma school district to incorporate the Bible into its curriculum as an elective. His hope is that schoolchildren can put America on a righteous course.
Hobby Lobby has challenged the new health care law to the Supreme Court, saying a requirement that it provide certain types of birth control to employees violates the Green family's personal religious freedom.
Rick Tepker, a professor at the University of Oklahoma Law Center, says Green's objective "amounts to civil disobedience against the First Amendment."
Green declined interview requests.
