SANTA ANA, Calif. – There's a lot riding on a California law to grant driver's licenses to immigrants in the country illegally and supporters are already preparing prospective drivers to pass the test required to get one.
A Mexican consulate is hosting monthly driver's license test preparation classes. A community college is designing a course. And California's Department of Motor Vehicles has put together audio materials in Spanish to help immigrants prepare before the licenses are issued in 2015.
The push comes after Nevada saw a high failure rate the first few weeks a new driver authorization card was offered to immigrants.
Lizette Mata, deputy director of special projects at California's DMV, says the goal is to spread the word so immigrants know about the test and study before they apply for the license.
