A former Rochester-area shipyard that produced tankers for the U.S. military during World War II could be redeveloped as a shopping plaza.

The Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester reports that a purchase offer has been accepted by the current owners of the 33-acre property near Lake Ontario in the town of Greece. The realtor who listed the property isn't revealing the purchase price or the name of the buyer, but says it's a West Coast development group that wants to turn the site into a retail complex.

The property was home to the Odenbach Shipbuilding Corp. during World War II. The plant turned out ocean-going tankers for the Army. The site later made bomber parts and missile equipment for the Air Force.

The property is a Superfund site and is undergoing an environmental cleanup.
