Seven schools in southern California were temporarily placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon after an earlier shootout involving police at a busy intersection.

The Orange County Register reports that the shooting occurred at around 9 a.m., after the suspect was seen carrying a sawed-off shotgun near an apartment complex. There were no reports of injuries in the shooting.

Police in the city of Tustin, which is about 33 miles south of Los Angeles, searched through several nearby apartment buildings after the suspect fled. He was taken into custody before 2 p.m., uninjured, according to Sgt. Andrew Birozy of the Tustin Police Department. The school lockdowns were lifted after the suspect was taken into custody

The shooting was reported in a busy area surrounded by shops, homes and apartment buildings, and the weapon was not recovered, police say.

No police officers were hurt in the incident, Sgt. Birozy said.
