JUNEAU, Alaska – Several people in Sitka took the state's Tsunami Warning as the real thing because of the omission of the phrase, "This is a test."
KCAW reports because of a software error, the warning used "live codes" that contains different phraseology than a test.
According to Joel Curtis with the National Weather Service, the message that was broadcast used the actual warning "template," which overwrote the warning message composed for the live test.
The live test targeted coastal communities without the "This is a test" disclaimer.
The test in Sitka was followed by a call burst from the police department confirming to residents the tsunami warning message was only a test.
