NEW YORK – A juror with an undisclosed ailment has been excused at the New York City trial of five former employees of jailed financier Bernard Madoff (MAY'-dawf).
A federal judge told lawyers Thursday that the 11 remaining jurors would continue deliberating. The deliberations began Monday and were to resume Friday morning after the juror's ailment caused a one-day interruption.
The trial focused on what happened within Madoff's offices during a fraud that lasted decades. Thousands of investors lost nearly $20 billion along with double that in fictitious profits.
Those on trial include Madoff's secretary, his director of operations, an account manager and two computer programmers.
Madoff is serving a 150-year prison sentence. He pleaded guilty to fraud charges after he ran out of money in late 2008.
