New Jersey demolishes first flood-damaged home under Superstorm Sandy buyout program

New Jersey has demolished the first flood-damaged home under a Superstorm Sandy buyout program.

The home on Weber Avenue in Sayreville is among four demolitions scheduled this week in the Middlesex County town. The family that had lived there for 25 years has relocated to another home in Sayreville.

The state's $300 million Blue Acres program seeks to purchase Sandy-damaged homes in flood-prone areas from willing sellers and return the land to open spaces.

The state says 171 property owners in Sayreville and South River have accepted buyout offers from the Department of Environmental Protection. The towns sustained significant flooding when Sandy's storm surge pushed from the Raritan Bay into the South River.

The DEP has closed on 50 homes so far.
