Crystal Mountain to sell chairs from chairlift destroyed by avalanche; 'overwhelming demand'

Avalanche Destroys Chairlift.JPEG

In this photo provided by Crystal Mountain Resort, snow from a 30-foot deep avalanche that wiped out a chairlift a day earlier remains behind Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Crystal Mountain, Wash. The avalanche that was intentionally triggered by the Ski Patrol brought down more snow than expected and wiped out a chairlift at the resort near Mount Rainier. No one was injured. Members of the Ski Patrol threw a 40-pound explosive on unstable snow as a safety precaution on the slope at 4:45 p.m. Monday after the resort had closed, but snow hit the High Campbell chairlift, the highest of 10 chairlifts at the resort on the northeast corner of Mount Rainier National Park. Within hours of an intentionally-set avalanche wiping out a chairlift at Crystal Mountain, the resort at Mount Rainier started hearing from people who wanted to buy the damaged chairs.

The Washington state resort plans to replace the chairlift this summer and it routinely sells off decommissioned chairs, but it's still dealing with Monday's avalanche. The slide was triggered by an explosive set off by the Ski Patrol to remove unstable snow.

General Manager John Kircher says on the resort's website that people who want chairs should put their name on a list at the office. He says, "The demand has been overwhelming, but right now is not the time."

The High Campbell chairlift was hit by an avalanche 30 feet deep that swept down a slope known as the Throne.
