Los Angeles airport shooting defendant to be moved; US lawyers yet to decide on death penalty

Government lawyers say they need more time to decide whether to seek the death penalty for the man accused of killing a Transportation Security Administration screener at Los Angeles International airport.

Paul Ciancia has pleaded not guilty to murder and other federal charges related to the shooting rampage last fall.

On Monday, Ciancia appeared briefly before a federal judge in Los Angeles.

His attorney said that within two weeks, Ciancia would be moved to the downtown federal lockup from a detention center east of Los Angeles, where doctors have treated him for wounds received during the shooting.

Meanwhile, Justice Department lawyers said they planned to make their death-penalty recommendation by July 3. The decision ultimately rests with the U.S. attorney general.

The next hearing is Aug. 11.
