An elite New York City private school is apologizing for how it dealt with a former longtime football coach who was accused of abusing students.

Poly Prep Country Day School posted a statement on its website Friday offering "deepest apologies" to those who reported being abused by the coach, Philip Foglietta. The Daily News first reported the statement.

Foglietta was accused of groping and raping boys while at Poly Prep from 1966 to 1991.  The Brooklyn school forced Foglietta's retirement in 1991, but school officials didn't publicly acknowledge the reasons behind his departure.

Foglietta died in 1998.  Poly Prep settled a lawsuit over his conduct in 2012.

In the statement, headmaster David Harman and board Chairman Scott Smith say the school should have immediately reported Foglietta to the authorities.
