A diplomat who visited the family of a Pakistani exchange student in a coma for three months says they're relieved by a deal that resolves his visa and insurance issues to ensure he can stay in the U.S. and get the long-term care he needs.
Muhammad Shahzaib Bajwa (BAHJ-wah) was an exchange student at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He was in a fellow student's car that struck a deer in November. Bajwa went into cardiac arrest, and remains in a coma in fair condition at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
Pakistan's consul general from Chicago drove to Duluth to meet Bajwa's family. Faisal Niaz Tirmizi (teer-MEE-zee) says they were "visibly relieved" when he detailed the solution, which will put Bajwa in a long-term care facility in the Duluth area.
