Navy admiral apparent White House choice to take reins of troubled NSA, US Cyber Command

U.S. officials say a Navy admiral is the apparent choice to be the next chief of the troubled National Security Agency, which is under pressure to revamp surveillance programs after widespread criticism of its collection of phone and Internet data around the world.

Vice Adm. Mike Rogers, a former intelligence director and currently the head of the Navy's Cyber Command, will likely be nominated to replace Army Gen. Keith Alexander, the officials said. He would step into a firestorm of complaints about the government's spying and intelligence gathering. Alexander is slated to retire in March. Rogers also would be nominated to take over U.S. Cyber Command.

The officials confirmed the selection on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly ahead of any eventual White House announcement.
