An 86-year-old Nevada woman shot by her husband while hospitalized in an apparent murder suicide has died, and her husband of more than six decades has been charged with murder.

The Carson City sheriff's office says Francis Dresser of Douglas County died from injuries suffered when she was shot in the chest Sunday while at Carson-Tahoe Regional Medical Center.

Charges against her husband, 88-year-old William Dresser, have been amended to murder.

William Dresser was arrested after firing one shot with a small-caliber handgun.

Investigators say Dresser intended to kill his wife and then himself, but the gun malfunctioned. He told investigators his wife was paralyzed and didn't want to live.

He remains jailed and on suicide watch at the Carson City jail.
