An Austin businessman wants the Texas Supreme Court to scrub from the Internet what he says are defamatory comments posted by an old boss.

Robert Kinney is bringing his case Thursday to the state's highest civil court. He says his former employer wrote an online post accusing him of running a kickback scheme after being fired from a law firm in 2004.

Those accusations remain on the Internet, and a lower Texas court has already ruled the remarks should stay there. That court ruled that doing otherwise would be a restraint on free speech.

But a reversal from the state's nine justices could have a far-reaching impact in Texas on damaging remarks posted online. Kinney's attorney says courts in other states have recently ruled in their favor in similar cases.
