New York mural seen as hex at center of million-dollar lawsuit

A New York politician is being accused of putting a Caribbean hex on a rival, in the form of a black-magic mural on her building, the New York Post reports.

According to the paper, Gwen Goodwin, 52, has filed a million-dollar lawsuit against City Council member Melissa Mark-Viverito – who trounced Goodwin in the Democratic primary for the seat in September.

Goodwin says Mark-Viverito targeted her E. 100th St. building as the canvas for a five-story image of a rooster on top of wooden poles. The head is just below the window of the apartment where Goodwin has lived since 1997.

The mural is part of an urban-art campaign launched last summer called Los Muros Hablan (“the walls speak”).

“According to neighbors of Puerto Rican and other backgrounds, in the Caribbean culture, this constituted a curse and a death threat, as a swastika or a noose would symbolize typically to many Jews or African-Americans,” Goodwin alleges in a Manhattan Supreme Court suit she filed Friday, the Post reported.
