The man who shot and killed his stepdaughter at their home in Colorado Springs, apparently mistaking her for a burglar, is a decorated Fort Carson soldier who has served in Iraq.
Police on Monday identified him as 29-year-old Daniel Meade and his 14-year-old stepdaughter as Kiana (KEE-yan-a) O'Neil.
Police say a burglary was reported at the home the morning of Dec. 23 and that officers arrived to find O'Neil shot by Meade. She later died at the hospital.
Details of the shooting haven't been released. Meade hasn't been arrested or charged.
The Gazette (http://bit.ly/1eRg3dA) reports that more than 100 people gathered for a candlelight vigil for O'Neil on Saturday in Colorado Springs following her funeral. Her mother called the shooting a "tragic accident."
