Former Minneapolis mayoral candidate Mark Andrew said he was tackled and beaten in an attempted theft of his iPhone at Mall of America, MyFoxTwinCities reported.

Andrew told the Star Tribune he was sitting at a table inside Starbucks at the mall around 7 p.m. Thursday when someone grabbed his phone and ran away. He said he chased after the thief, but was tackled by two young women at the exit.

"I'm not going to let someone take my phone," Andrew told the newspaper. "I'm not going to let that pass. They thought they wouldn't get chased."

Andrew said one of the women beat him in the head and face with some type of club. The phone was dropped and returned by a passerby.

The two women were arrested. Andrew said he needed 9 stitches to his head.
