It won't be a very jolly Christmas for some who ordered items to be delivered via UPS. The shipping company announced Tuesday that some deliveries would be delayed until after the holiday because a high volume of packages left the company's delivery system overwhelmed.
""The volume of air packages in our system exceeded the capacity in our network as demand was much greater than the forecast," UPS spokeswoman Natalie Godwin in a statement Tuesday. "As a result a small percentage of packages was delayed and will not be delivered today."
It was not immediately clear how many deliveries were affected, but Godwin said most of the deliveries were expected to be made the day after Christmas. UPS drivers were delivering packages as normal Tuesday but they were not scheduled to work on Christmas Day.
Godwin said extra workers would be called in Wednesday night at the company's international hub in Louisville, Ky. to sort packages for delivery Thursday.
In addition to high demand, UPS reported shipping delays in the Dallas-Forth Worth area after an ice storm hit the region earlier this month. In Fort Worth Tuesday, people stood in line for hours at a UPS distribution center to pick up their packages.
Most of the people leaving the UPS hub in Fort Worth left with their boxes. People in the long line cheered as customers exited one-by-one with their packages.
