Rose Gilbert, a longtime Los Angeles school teacher who retired earlier this year, has died at age 95.

Grandson David Gilbert tells the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1dmKFhE) that his grandmother died of age-related causes on Monday at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica.

Rose Gilbert was 94 when she retired in late February from her classroom at Palisades Charter High School, where she passed along her passion for poetry and literature to generations of students.

At the time she joked in an Associated Press interview that she didn't want to leave but decided to do so before she got too old.

Gilbert started teaching in the 1940s, took a break and then returned to the classroom in 1956. She joined the Palisades staff in 1961.
