State officials are investigating what led to a brawl last year that broke out in the baby room of a daycare southeast of Atlanta.

The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning launched the investigation Thursday, after surveillance video surfaced of the fight inside the McGarity School of Prep in McDonough.

The video, first aired by WSB-TV, shows fists flying as adults battle each other, crashing into cribs and a mechanical swing.

The video shows a woman racing to rescue one toddler when the fight comes within inches of the child. Another toddler is seen wandering toward the combatants, eventually hiding behind a woman and clinging to her leg.

One parent told police that he was attacked by workers while holding his 1-year-old son but police said it was the parent who was the aggressor, WSB-TV’s report said. The owner of the facility, another worker and a parent could be seen hitting each other in the room, the report said.

The fight reportedly stemmed from a confrontation over the parent's child being suspended from the center. Charges against the parent were recently dismissed, the report said.

A state official said the video is a year old, but the agency that regulates daycares opened the probe this week after learning of its existence.

Reg Griffin, the chief spokesman from the department, told FoxNews.com that regardless who the aggressor was, the situation appeared to be handled “horribly” by those involved.

He said the department will investigate the incident and determine the proper response. The department can pull from a menu of options including implementing technical assistance to revoking its license.
