Student in custody after standoff inside Ohio high school, police say

A student with a pellet gun is in custody after a standoff inside an Ohio high school, police said.

Toledo police said the student had isolated himself Monday morning in a hallway inside Scott High School and had a pellet gun that looked like a real handgun

Police spokesman Lt. Mark King told Toledo News Now that police negotiators spoke with the student, who is 14 years old. Officials say he didn't give a reason for bringing the pellet gun to school. There were no details about the boy's movements at the school beforehand.

The building was temporarily put on lockdown and two classrooms near the student's location in the school were evacuated.

Police fired a beanbag at the student's foot before he was taken into custody, the station reports.

There were no injuries in the incident and the district said students inside the building are safe. The students will be allowed to leave the school with parents who show a photo ID.

A woman outside the school, Lorraine Foster of Toledo, said the teen is her nephew. She was there with the boy's mother, who was talking to police.

"That's just not him," said Foster, who didn't give the boy's name. "I don't know what happened."

She said she saw him about a month ago and that he was talking about playing football.

"He's a good, young kid," she said. "I'm glad he came out safe."

Scott High School has about 600 students.
