SANTA ANA, Calif. – Two California police officers accused in the death of a homeless man are heading to trial more than two years after the violent confrontation.
Manuel Ramos goes on trial Monday on charges of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the death of 37-year-old Kelly Thomas, who died after an encounter with six Fullerton police officers.
Jay Cicinelli also heads to trial on charges of involuntary manslaughter and excessive use of force.
Both have pleaded not guilty.
The case marks the first time in the history of Orange County that a police officer has been charged with murder for on-duty actions. The confrontation was captured on surveillance video.
