The son-in-law of the on-duty New York Police Department traffic enforcement agent who was struck and killed by a vacuum truck says he loved his job.

Dananjaya Waragoda (don-nuh-JAI'-yah wah-rah-GO'-duh) says his father-in-law, 71-year-old Kalyanarat Ranasinghe (ka-LEE'-an-ah-rat ra-nuh-SEEN'-uh), especially enjoyed helping people who asked for directions.

Police say Ranasinghe was killed by the truck as it pulled away from a parking spot Saturday at about 2:30 p.m. in midtown Manhattan. They say he was pinned under the wheel and declared dead at the scene. They say the 43-year-old driver of the truck remained at the scene.

Waragoda says his father-in-law emigrated from Sri Lanka about 20 years ago. He says Ranasinghe had been married for more than 50 years and had one daughter.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg offered his prayers for the family.
