Miami Herald reporter detained in Venezuela; paper says he was covering shortages

The Miami Herald says one of its journalists has been detained by Venezuelan authorities while reporting in the South American country.

The newspaper says reporter Jim Wyss was initially detained by the National Guard and then transferred to the custody of military intelligence. Executive Editor Aminda Marques Gonzalez says in a statement that there doesn't appear to be any basis for his detention.

Wyss had been in custody for more than 12 hours by late Friday afternoon. Venezuelan journalists told the paper in a story published on its website that they saw him in custody but were not permitted to speak to him.

Wyss is the Andean bureau chief for the Herald and was reporting on Venezuela's chronic shortages and upcoming municipal elections.
