A nephew of New York Giants co-owner John Mara was arrested early Tuesday morning and accused of setting motorcycles on fire in his Manhattan neighborhood.
The New York Post reported that 26-year-old Stephen Mara has been charged with arson and told police that he set the fires because bikers were revving their engines in the middle of the night and setting off car alarms.
The paper reported that Mara was caught in the act at approximately 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, when a security guard at the nearby 69th Regimental Armory on Lexington Avenue saw him setting the fires in the tony Gramercy Park neighborhood.
A female neighbor told the Post "I heard two explosions. I felt the vibrations from them,” the woman said. “I went to my window and I saw [the security guard] dragging who I thought was a woman, so I called the police."
Frank Galea, Mara's building superintendent, told the Post that two cars were destroyed in addition to the motorcycles.
"For someone to do this you have to be sick in the head," Galea said. "Call the police but don’t take matters into your own hands."
Mara is the nephew of Giants co-owner John Mara, who along with Steve Tisch has overseen the famous NFL franchise since the death of his father, Wellington Mara, in 2005. In 2006, Stephen Mara's father, also named Stephen, was arrested after getting into a fight on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange with an Eagles fan who taunted him after a game between the two NFC East rivals.
The younger Stephen Mara works for Major League Baseball as Coordinator of On-Field Operations.
