Maine man who spent 27 years as hermit before arrest gets special court program, will be freed

A Maine man who lived like a hermit for nearly three decades before his arrest on burglary charges will soon be released from jail and begin transitioning back into society.

Christopher Knight, known as the North Pond Hermit, pleaded guilty Monday to 13 counts of burglary and theft and was admitted into the Co-Occurring Disorders Court.

Through the special program, Knight will have weekly hearings while he lives and work in the community. He'll also get counseling and treatment for alcohol abuse.

The specific date of his release hasn't been determined, but his lawyer said it could be within a few months.

Police say the 47-year-old Knight may have been responsible for up to 1,000 burglaries for food, clothing, camping and cooking gear while he lived in the woods of central Maine before his arrest in April.
