WATERLOO, N.Y. – Lawyers have begun interviewing potential jurors for the trial of an upstate New York man accused of killing his son for a hefty insurance payout.
Seneca County prosecutors say Monday that opening statements in the case against Karl Karlsen case are expected on Nov. 6.
Karlsen is charged with second-degree murder and insurance fraud in the death of his son Levi. The 23-year-old was killed in 2008 when the truck he was working under fell on him. Karlsen was the sole beneficiary of a $700,000 life insurance policy.
Authorities have also begun taking a new look into the 1991 death of Karlsen's former wife, Christina Karlsen. She died in a Calaveras County, Calif., fire that also resulted in an insurance payout.
Karlsen denies any wrongdoing.
