Police in Phoenix say a man fatally shot four of his neighbors and their two dogs at an apartment complex on Saturday before turning the gun on himself.

MyFox Phoenix, citing neighbors, reported that a grandfather, his daughter, the daughter's partner, and a teenage granddaughter, were killed in the rampage, which began at approximately 9 a.m.

"I was sleeping. I heard a gunshot, I quickly jumped and looked out my window and I saw he was looking at the gun then put it back over the wall and shot again," neighbor Stanislav Mitev told MyFoxPhoenix.com.

Phoenix Sgt. Tommy Thompson told the Associated Press officers responded to a call about shots fired at the complex, and officers eventually narrowed down their search area to two apartments.

Two of the victims were found on the apartment's patio, while the other two were found inside, MyFoxPhoenix.com reported. Two dogs were also found dead in the apartment. The shooter, whose name has not been released, was found in the apartment next door.

One neighbor told the station the shooter tried to force his way into a second apartment.

"We woke up, somebody just banged on our door and they shot four rounds. I guess it was a shotgun, there's big old holes on my door," said Libni Deleon.

Police have not released the names of the victims or any details about what might have prompted the shootings.
