Egyptian lawyer's statements to authorities allowed for NY trial in Africa embassy bombings

A judge has rejected an Egyptian lawyer's efforts to suppress statements he made to British authorities in 1998 about the twin bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa.

Judge Lewis Kaplan in New York noted that Adel Abdel Bary should have understood his rights better than most people because he was an Egyptian lawyer. He also concluded that a raid that resulted in Bary's arrest was not a joint operation with U.S. authorities and did not require that he be given the U.S. version of a defendant's rights.

Bary and two others await trial in the 1998 bombings in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania that, killed 224 people, including 12 Americans. Five others have been convicted in the attacks. A lawyer for Bary declined to comment.
