An autopsy is planned on a fetus found on a teenager's shopping bag in New York in part to determine whether it was alive or dead when delivered.

The 17-year-old girls were suspected of shoplifting at a Victoria's Secret lingerie store in Manhattan on Thursday. Police were called after a guard noticed an odor and found the fetus.

Both girls have been arrested on charges of petit larceny. One has been hospitalized and the other is being questioned by police. More serious charges could follow.

Police say one of the girls told police she gave birth a day earlier but didn't know what to do with the remains. Officials say they don't think the girl gave birth at the store.
