A north Austin high school student fatally shot himself Tuesday in the school's courtyard during lunch in front of other horrified student, MyFoxAustin.com reported.
"He just pulled the gun out of his jacket and he was like, bam, and he was on the floor, twitching and everything," Shekinah Dawson, who witnessed the incident, told the station. She said the single gunshot sounded like a firecracker.
A spokesman from the Austin Independent School District confirmed that the student attended Lanier High School, which was then placed on lockdown.
Once the lockdown was lifted, faculty and students poured out of the building, some crying.

Lanier student Alexis Vasques said he knew the 16-year-old.
"All he did was post a Facebook status that he was going do it and then he did it," Vasques told the station.
An excerpt from the Facebook post read: "I don't know if this is going to affect people or if ya'll are even going to care but I just want to say I'm taking my life away not for my ex but cause I'm tired to be who I am I have give my mom a lot of pain trouble...I just want to say I'm sorry..."
Alex Sanchez from the Austin Independent School District said that AISD high schools do not have metal detectors. Representatives from the AISD said they're not allowed to check students or their bags for banned items like guns.
