Critics: Swift arrest of NC officer in unarmed man's shooting death will have chilling effect

Hours after a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer fatally shot an unarmed man, the department made a rare move: It charged the officer with voluntary manslaughter.

Most police departments, including Charlotte, usually take weeks or even months to complete an investigation of a police shooting.

But the decision to quickly charge Randall Kerrick in the September shooting is now drawing sharp criticism from police groups and being followed closely by law enforcement departments across the country.

Police say Kerrick fired 12 times at 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell while responding to a breaking and entering call. Ten of the bullets hit the former Florida A&M University football player.

Officers say Ferrell had been in a car wreck and sought help at a nearby house. A woman called authorities when she didn't recognize the man.
