Evacuations remain at Southern California Marine base as crews battle wind-driven wildfire

Evacuations remain in place as crews work to contain a wildfire that has scorched 1,500 acres of dry brush and damaged four buildings at a Southern California military base.

Press officer Sgt. Christopher Duncan says the fire at the Marine Corps' Camp Pendleton is 15 percent contained Sunday.

The fire broke out Saturday amid hot, dry and windy conditions. It quickly prompted the evacuation of 230 residents from a housing unit near Lake O'Neil.

Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton was not threatened, but a power outage prompted officials to evacuate about 30 patients to other hospitals.

About 40 miles to the north, crews are battling a vegetation fire that was sparked in a mulch pile at an Orange County nursery. It is sending up a huge plume of smoke visible for miles around.
