A woman was killed and a man was badly burned when the small plane they were flying in crashed in a bank parking lot in the Chicago suburbs Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities told MyFoxChicago.com that the single-engine plane clipped several trees, hit at least one light pole, and crashed into three cars, before it burst into flames at 5:15 p.m. in Bolingbrook, Ill.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the plane was flying from Georgetown, Ky., and was attempting to land at Clow International Airport, about half a mile from the crash site.
The female victim was officially pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m. local time by the deputy county coroner. The man was initially taken to a local hospital and was transferred to another medical center due to the severity of his burns.
No identifying information about either victim was immediately available, but witnesses told MyFoxChicago.com that the man emerged from the wreckage on fire. When passerby came to his assistance, he asked them to get his wife out of the plane.
"We were only 20 feet from the plane and we wanted to get him away," said Mike Grohar, who was working at a nearby restaurant at the time.
It was not clear who was piloting the plane and who was the passenger. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the crash.
