Alabama governor, other leaders speak out over all-white University of Alabama sororities

Several prominent leaders in Alabama are weighing in on allegations that all-white sororities passed over two prospective black members because of pressure from alumnae and in one case, an adviser.

Paul Bryant Jr., the president pro tem of the board of trustees and the son of legendary football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, said Friday the school does not support the segregation of any organization.

Gov. Robert Bentley, a University of Alabama alumnus, reiterated his earlier statements that fraternal organizations should choose people based on their qualifications, not race.

The student newspaper quoted sorority members saying they wanted to invite the students to join, but got overridden.

Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice John England Jr., a board trustee, confirms his stepgranddaughter was one of the black students who got passed over.
