Authorities say an inmate briefly took a deputy hostage, stabbed another and carjacked a motorist while escaping from a downtown Detroit courthouse.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon tells the Detroit Free Press that the inmate escaped Monday morning from a courtroom. Napoleon says the deputy was stabbed in the neck and was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital for treatment.

A message seeking information from Napoleon's office was left by The Associated Press.

Detroit police Chief James Craig tells reporters at the scene that the 25-year-old man was in custody for a court hearing related to a robbery. Craig says the man stole a minivan from a motorist near the courthouse and later abandoned that vehicle on the city's east side.

Officer searched the area near where the van was found.
