COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio's highway patrol and the union for troopers have settled a disagreement over shoes for the officers, who can now choose to wear a dressier short boot or a more athletic version with laces.
The Ohio State Troopers Association and several officers had filed grievances, contending the buckle boots being required were slick and potentially insecure, creating unsafe working conditions. The association's president says troopers are satisfied with the resolution signed Friday.
The patrol's new leader, Col. Paul Pride, considered it an issue more about comfort than safety but says providing options should help the patrol move past the issue and refocus on its work.
The dress shoe still is required in some circumstances.
Pride says the difference in cost between the shoes is a few cents.
