Oregon wildfire burns across 5,000 acres, threatens dozens of homes

A wildfire in Oregon has burned across 5,000 acres in the Columbia River Gorge, forcing the evacuation of several dozen buildings.

Spokesman David Morman said he had no reports of any homes burning Monday in the Government Flats Complex of fires. However, he says one of two structures that burned Sunday had been used as a residence.

Nobody has been injured in the fire, KPTV.com reported.

Morman said about 55 structures were ordered evacuated Monday, although he could not say how many were homes.

To the west, smoke from a grass fire on an uninhabited island in Columbia between Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash., disrupted Monday evening rush hour traffic on area freeways.

More than 80 firefighters managed to contain the 20-acre Government Island fire by Monday evening. Some campers were evacuated. Crews remained at the scene to put out any spot fires.

According to KPTV.com, 911 callers described the blaze as "a large field of grass on fire."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
