Authorities: Soldier charged with role in alleged scheme to divert fuel trucks in Afghanistan

An American soldier has been charged with taking part in an alleged scheme to divert fuel trucks from a military base in Afghanistan to a local company in exchange for money.

A bill of information unsealed Monday says Staff Sgt. Bilal Kevin Abdullah took part in the alleged plot at Forward Operating Base Fenty in Jalalabad, Afghanistan from May 2010 through June 2011. Court documents say the alleged scheme cost the U.S. about $2.2 million over 18 months.

Prosecutors say Abdullah, a member of the 426th Brigade Support Battalion based at Fort Campbell, Ky., would arrange fake fuel transport missions and create false travel documents for fuel trucks. According to authorities, fuel would be stolen once the trucks left the base.

Court records did not list an attorney for Abdullah.
