ALEXANDRIA, Va. – A Virginia man was back in a federal courtroom more than two years after he first challenged his apparent placement on the government's no-fly list.
Gulet (GOO'-lett) Mohamed of Alexandria filed the lawsuit in January 2011 when he was barred from returning to the U.S. after a stay in Kuwait, where he says he was beaten by authorities who detained him.
Mohamed was allowed back into the U.S. after filing the lawsuit, but the legal issues regarding the constitutionality of his placement on the list remain unresolved. The 21-year-old Mohamed says he is still barred from flying.
A judge had dismissed his complaint but the federal appeals court in Richmond reinstated the case this year.
Government attorneys maintain Mohamed's case is moot because he was allowed back in the U.S.
