HONOLULU – A judge says a man who turned Honolulu highways into "literal killing zones" should spend the rest of his life in prison.
Toby Stangel was sentenced Wednesday to three consecutive life terms for the murder of a mother of 10 and the attempted murders of two drivers.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Dwight Nadamoto says because of mandatory minimum sentences it will be at least 60 years before 30-year-old Stangel could be eligible for parole.
Stangel's defense attorney John Schum says his client heard voices that told him to "kill or be killed" on June 3, 2011, when he went on the shooting rampage.
Judge Glenn Kim says drug abuse and "twisted thinking" led to a "killing rampage."
Stangel and his parents apologized to 54-year-old Tammy Nguyen's family. Her family declined comment.
