Front doors re-installed at NYC's St. Patrick's Cathedral as part of $177M restoration

New York City's St. Patrick's Cathedral is showing off its newly restored massive bronze front doors.

The ornately carved double doors are being re-installed Wednesday. The complex process began Tuesday.

The $550,000 conservation and restoration took three months. It was done by G&L Popian (POH'-pee-uhn) Inc., a family-owned business in Queens.

Lucia Popian says the work was done entirely by hand. It involved removing seven layers of paint and restoring the original patina.

The doors are the second set to grace the landmark Fifth Avenue edifice. They were blessed by Cardinal Francis Spellman and opened just before Christmas in 1949.

The original doors were wooden.

The Roman Catholic cathedral was completed in 1878. A 3-year, $177 million interior and exterior restoration began last year.
