American Indians in South Dakota are waiting for the results of a vote on whether to legalize alcohol on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Tribal spokeswoman Tony Red Cloud says the nine polling places closed early in the evening, but the counting got started about 90 minutes later because all ballots were taken to the town of Pine Ridge.
The reservation is bigger than the state of Delaware, so it took a while for the outlying ballots to arrive.
The election supervisor says demonstrators opposed to legalization threatened to disrupt the vote, so the tribe opted to add security during voting and not count the ballots at the polling places.
One of the demonstrators denied making any threats.
The result is expected to be close.
