Wife pleads for help for husband injured in Calif. power plant implosion on 911 call

The wife of the man who had his leg severed during the demolition of a Central California power plant called 911 for help just after the planned implosion.

"My husband’s legs have been blown off," Nora Wood screamed after the explosion sent pieces of shrapnel flying, injuring her husband, Jerry, ABC 23 News reported.

Mary Lisa Russell, a spokeswoman for Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, said on Tuesday that Jerry Wood was in critical condition.

The 43-year-old Bakersfield resident was among five people injured when shrapnel flew past a safety perimeter during Saturday's demolition.

The other four spectators sustained minor injuries.

The steam power plant was owned by the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. The utility has said it hired subcontractors to handle the demolition.

Nora Wood is heard on the 911 call recording trying to tell the emergency dispatcher what has happened as her husband cries in pain, ABC 23 News reported.

Paramedics were on the scene treating Jerry Wood within five minutes of the call.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health and California Public Utilities Commission are investigating the incident.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
