A Los Angeles couple is in custody in Qatar on a charge of killing their 8-year-old daughter by starvation.

Alex Simpson, an associate director for the California Innocence Project, said Monday that Matt and Grace Huang were arrested after their adopted daughter, Gloria, died on Jan. 15.

The nonprofit says Gloria would periodically go several days without eating and then binge because of her impoverished upbringing in Ghana. She had not eaten in four days when she died.

The Huangs are accused of starving their daughter to death.

They have two other adopted children from Africa. The family moved to Qatar in 2012 because Matt Huang, an engineer, was working on infrastructure projects.

A call and email to the Qatar Embassy in Washington, D.C., were not returned.
