Virginia teen dies after high school cross-country run

A Virginia teen mysteriously collapsed and died Thursday after completing a run for her would-be high school’s cross country team.

Joy Meyer, 14, was about a month away from the start of her freshman year at Menchville High School in Newport News, according to WAVY.com. Meyer reportedly participated in the first official day of practice for the school’s cross country team.

After completing the Noland Trail at Mariner’s Museum Park, she complained of dizziness and soon-thereafter collapsed.

WAVY.com reports Meyer was rushed to a local hospital, where was pronounced dead.

Michelle Price, a Newport News Public Schools spokeswoman, told the website Meyer had a current physical on file that contained no warnings signs, or known medical conditions. A pair of coaches and trainers was reportedly present for the practice.

Brad Sullivan, a recent Menchville High School graduate and former cross country team member, told WAVY.com that the Noland Trail is a demanding course.

"The entire trail is basically running up and down hills,” Sullivan reportedly said. “Combined with 95 degree heat, that's something you really need to be taking a break every half mile, basically to get some water," he said.
